Bringing paper dresses to life with light
When we are given a beautiful canvas to play with lighting, it truly excites us! The Magnetic Storm Cape Town Team unleashed its lighting and special effects skills when it was briefed by wedding-planner Blank Canvas and photographer Samantha Clifton to showcase unique paper wedding dress designs constructed by the talented Hermien from PLANK Create.
“As well as standard lighting, we used colour to add atmosphere and bring the dresses to life,” comments Andrew Gibson, Magnetic Storm Cape Town MD and lighting designer for the project. “They wanted something different, so coloured lighting was used on the backdrops and the models, as well as imagery projection on the model and their background.”
Talking about the inspiration, Andrew Gibson explains that the focus was recyclable paper wedding dresses, something completely unusual and the clients wanted to compliment the shoot with an unusual, raw look with the wow factor to take people’s breath away. “We suggested that playing with colours and imagery on the plain white paper dresses could be complimentary and give the shoot an unusual perspective” adds Gibson.

Let’s get technical
Magnetic Storm used Martin Mac 550s for gobo projection, allowing the team to project images onto the wall or onto the models. Robe 300's were used for general wash lights and colour, and a Christie LX605 projector to project onto the wall and model was also used.
